A Syracuse Yankee in Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's Court

Life in Dubai is strange. There are times, like when I am sitting at my desk or when I am wandering through the local mall, when I forget that I am in the Gulf. This office, this mall, this hotel, could easily be an American one, until you see a woman wearing the abiya, you hear the 4 am salat, and it slaps you in the face that you are in the Middle East, in a city that straddles history and the future.
